B I N O C U L A R      R I V A L R Y

A one person video installation in which the viewer examines  a screen through a construction of mirrors. This construction enables the left eye of the viewer to be presented with a completely different image compared to the right eye, which does not occur in our daily lives. The brain attempts to merge the two images resulting in a neurological phenomenon called binocular rivalry: every 2 to 4 seconds the brain melts the one image into the other. Manuel uses this phenomenon to create a meditative audiovisual experience in which he attempts to connect the viewer to something bigger than ourselves, something outside the control of our conventional ego’s. Binocular Rivalry is one of Manuel’s graduation performances from the Performance programme at the Toneelacademie Maastricht.
